Poison Elves

Völlig verblüfft hab ich gerade auf BoingBoing gelesen, dass Drew Hayes, der Autor der Comic-Serie Poison Elves, bereits 2007 verstorben ist. Neben den Pinis (Elfquest) und Cerebus war Hayes einer der Comicautoren, die den Weg vom Underground Artist zum erfolgreichen Eigenvermarkter geschafft haben. Dabei war Poison Elves alles andere als Mainstream:
The art was a black-and-white gothic scratchboard, and Poison Elves’ mix of choppy dream sequences, drug issues, serial killers, strippers and supernatural weirdness looks rough and adolescent at first blush.
Hayes hatte auch keine Probleme eine Ausgabe des Comics fast nur aus Text bestehen zu lassen und Bilder fast völlig zu vergessen. Die Geschichte war wichtig, sonst nichts. Gab es deswegen eine Beschwerde im Leserbrief, so beschimpfte Hayes den Autor des Briefs in der nächsten Ausgabe ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Überhaupt waren Leserbriefe und das Editorial eine wichtige Säule des Erfolges von Poison Elves. Hayes schrieb im Editorial über sein Leben: Die Erfolge, die Abstürze, welche Frau ihm gerade das Herz gebrochen hatte. Er kommunizierte mit den Lesern, lange bevor es Blogs und Web 2.0 gab.
Heute Abend werde ich die Abenteuer von Lusiphur wieder aus dem Schrank ziehen…
Top 10 Comic Nazis

Die Top 10 Liste von Topless Robot “The 10 Most Ridiculous Comic Book Nazis” macht meine Auswahl schwierig.
Ich kann mich nicht zwischen Armless Tiger Man und Swarm entscheiden.
Armless Tiger Man:
Armless Tiger Man had his arms pulled off by machines in Munich and swore revenge on machines. The Gestapo found out and figured, hey, he’ll wreck all the machines in Germany, let’s send him over to fight Allied machines. His legs and teeth are really strong, but he’s handicapped both by his lack of arms, his stupid name, and a haircut that’s long in the front and shaved in the back so he looks like a fool.
Swarm
The opening two sentences about Swarm from his wikipedia entry say it all: “Fritz von Meyer was born in Leipzig, Germany, and became one of Hitler’s top scientists. Escaping capture after World War II, he became a beekeeper in South America and discovered a colony of mutated bees.” They ate him, then left his skeleton and became a sentient swarm of bees. So yeah, Nazi made of bees.
Der Comic-Laden der Zukunft

in comics, digital is the elephant in the room this year. By the end of the year there will be a small pile of new-gen tablet computers. And, if not Longbox, then probably two or three other places at minimum where you can buy comics in one way or another. And a handful of pirate sites that become tablet(s)-friendly. Digital comics sales are all about this simple question – the threat of cannibalising the bricks-and-mortar comics store network, against a digital system that can reach all the places where comics stores simply don’t exist.
